How Much Does Autoclave Servicing Cost in the UK? (2026 Guide)

This is the article we’d want a practice manager comparing service quotes to find. Honest indicative ranges, our own published prices laid out plainly, and the gotchas worth knowing before you sign anything.

The short answer

For a typical UK B-type benchtop dental autoclave in 2026, here’s what to budget for the three different annual compliance items:

  • Service alone: £150, £300 + VAT, indicative UK range
  • Validation alone: £200, £400 + VAT
  • PVI alone: £100, £200 + VAT
  • Service + PVI bundle: £200, £350 + VAT
  • Full annual bundle (Service + PVI + Validation): £400, £600 + VAT

Our own published prices sit at the competitive end of every band. The full table is below, and we’ll explain what’s actually in each.

What you’re actually buying, three different things

Most of the confusion in the autoclave servicing market comes from conflating service, validation and PVI into one phrase. They’re three separate compliance items under three separate sources of authority, and a provider who can’t distinguish them clearly probably isn’t doing them properly.

Service. Manufacturer-spec preventive maintenance. Door seal replacement, filter changes, pressure relief valve test, chamber descale, vacuum pump check (Type B), sensor calibration check, software/firmware update where supported, signed engineer report. HTM 01-05 §12.1 sits behind it: “The sterilizer should be maintained and serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.” Most manufacturers specify annual.

Validation. Independent calibrated probes go into the chamber, the engineer runs a series of representative cycles, and you get a written report showing the cycle actually hits target temperature, pressure and dwell time within tolerance. HTM 01-05 §12.2 mandates it: “Validation is needed for new equipment at installation and annually thereafter. It will also be necessary to validate equipment after any major repairs have been carried out.”

Pressure Vessel Inspection (PVI). A statutory examination under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. Regulation 8(1) makes the Written Scheme of Examination compulsory: “The user of an installed system and owner of a mobile system shall not operate the system or allow it to be operated unless he has a written scheme for the periodic examination, by a competent person…” Maximum 14 months between examinations per CQC Mythbuster 12.

Three legal items, three certificates, one autoclave. You need all three.

Our published prices

These are live on our service and maintenance page and they don’t move:

Service Type B-Type (Vacuum) N-Type (Non-Vacuum) Washer-Disinfector
Standard Service £185 + VAT £185 + VAT £255 + VAT
Validation £295 + VAT £250 + VAT £335 + VAT
Service + PVI £235 + VAT £210 + VAT ,
Validation + PVI £335 + VAT £290 + VAT ,
Service + PVI + Validation £450 + VAT £395 + VAT ,

PAT testing can be added to any service, PVI or validation visit.

Why the bundle saves you money

The mechanical maths on a B-type autoclave at our prices:

  • Buying piecemeal across three visits: £185 service + £295 validation + roughly £50 PVI uplift (the difference between Service alone and Service+PVI) = around £530
  • Buying the full annual bundle in one visit: £450

That’s about £80 saved on a single B-type autoclave annually, on the price tag alone. The bigger saving is the one that doesn’t show on the invoice: one engineer day instead of three, one paperwork pack covering all three certificates, one date in the diary to remember instead of three, and zero scheduling friction around chasing the second and third visits before the PVI ceiling drifts past 14 months.

For multi-machine practices, the proportional saving scales. For multi-site groups, having every site land in the same compliance window with consistent paperwork format makes the practice manager’s job materially easier.

What’s typically NOT included in a headline price

Worth asking explicitly before you sign, because providers vary on these:

Service kit / consumables. Some providers include the door seal and filters in the service price; others price the kit separately. Ours includes manufacturer-spec consumables in the service.

Spare parts beyond consumables. A failed pump, transducer or board is a parts cost on top of the service visit labour. We hold common spares for the brands we install (Castellini, Stern Weber, Mocom) so most repairs happen on the same visit.

PAT testing. Sometimes bundled, often a separate line item. We add it to any service/PVI/validation visit on request.

Multiple machines at one site. Per-unit discount usually available; depends on the brand, the model, and the configuration of your decontamination room. Worth asking.

What to ask before signing a service contract

The buyer-protection checklist. If a provider can’t answer these clearly, look elsewhere.

  • Is service plus validation plus PVI a single visit or three separate ones? (Three visits means three call-out windows, three engineer days, three paperwork packs to coordinate.)
  • Is the service kit (door seal, filters, consumables) included or a separate line?
  • What’s the call-out response time for a breakdown? Same-day, next-day, or “when we can”?
  • Do they have manufacturer expertise for your specific brand? Service quality varies wildly by brand familiarity.
  • Per-visit pricing vs an annual contract. What’s locked in, what isn’t?
  • Who issues the PVI certificate: them or an insurance-led inspector? Both are valid; you need to know which.

What it costs you NOT to service properly

Three categories of cost from neglected servicing:

Compliance failure at CQC. Regulation 15 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 requires equipment to be “properly maintained.” A practice unable to produce a current service certificate, validation report or PVI is heading for a non-compliance finding. Mythbuster 12 specifically asks about validation records.

PSSR breach if PVI lapses past 14 months. Operating an autoclave outside its Written Scheme of Examination is a criminal offence the HSE can act on. The 14-month ceiling is a maximum, not a flexible target.

Premature autoclave failure. A well-maintained autoclave from a quality manufacturer lasts a decade or more. A neglected one fails years earlier, and the replacement cost dwarfs the annual servicing spend several times over. Limescale on a heating element from running on tap water rather than RO is the single most expensive maintenance shortcut a practice can take.

The longer pictures on each sit in our HTM 01-05 validation guide and our CQC inspection guide for practice managers.

How to get us booked

Ring 01274 265566 and tell us what you’ve got, the autoclave brand and model, whether you need service, validation, PVI or the full bundle, and your postcode for travel logistics. We’ll quote a fixed price for the planned work and give you an honest ETA. No surprises on the day.

For practices replacing an ageing unit alongside the service, the three new Class B ranges we install sit on the practice equipment page. Quoted with installation, commissioning, first-year validation and PVI in a single package.
